About Vietnam

Vietnam, the diverse and mystical South East Asian country, bordered by China, Laos, Cambodia and the South China Sea, is home to more than 80 million people (2001 figure). Its 990 year old capital Hanoi, in the north is surrounded by the scenic beauty of Sapa and Halong Bay. Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in the country was the southern capital Saigon prior to 1975's reunification.

The country's economy while relying heavily on income returns from rice and other agricultural exports is in a state of transition. The expansion of foreign investment opportunities has "transferred new technology and knowledge to Vietnam, and expanded choices in employment opportunities…….and have enabled many formerly poor families to escape poverty and greatly improve their lives." (Looking Ahead: A Common Country Assesment, UNDP Vietnam, 1999.)

Ho Chi Minh City covers an area of over 2029 sq kilometers, it consists of an urban center which is home to 75% of the city's population and rural districts that house the remaining 25% of the population. Official records put the population at over 4 million though unofficial estimates suggest levels of between 6 to 7 million. Ho Chi Minh City is the modern, industrial and commercial heart of Vietnam.
