in the summer of 2003, i received a phone call from my good friend mike poeschl. we had been working on a number of business ventures together over the past year in hopes of finding an idea that was worthy of our time and financial investment. during that telephone conversation mike planted a seed that would grow to be eden surfboards. his idea was to create a Christian surfboard company.
why would people buy surfboards just because it had a Christian message attached? why would stores stock our products? why would people choose our product over other name brand products? it was, to say the least, an idea that would not go away.
i asked these questions to Christians and non-Christians alike and received two distinctly separate answers. Christians welcomed the idea because it offers them an alternative to the dominant surfboard and surf apparel companies that use advertising techniques (the sex sells attitude) that conflict with many of their moral values. most non-Christians that we questioned did not care what the message was so long quality of our products matched the secular products.
