Description

John Chilton first discovered his love for photography while living in Colorado in the Summer of 1994. When he embarked on a three-week road trip through the Northwest U.S., he did not even own a camera. A friend from Breckenridge, Todd Johnston let him borrow his point & shoot for the trip. After shooting landscapes in Yellowstone, Seattle, Mt. Rainier, Northern California, Vegas and Zion in Utah – he was hooked! When he relocated to Historic Charleston, South Carolina in 1995 he purchased his first real camera, a Nikon N50. Charleston offered up a plethora of photo opportunities for John to practice his skills and build his portfolio. During this time, he got great satisfaction giving his photos as gifts to friends particularly as wedding gifts.

In the summers of 1997 & 1998, he formed Earthscapes Photography and began selling his work at the Charleston Farmer’s Market in Marion Square. His work can be seen in various restaurants and bars in the Charleston area including Lagerhead Tavern in Mt. Pleasant. He enjoys traveling to get unique shots, but also tries to find beauty in everyday things that are taken for granted. His focus is shifting towards more abstract photography and country themes such as barns in the rural South. Another area of photographic specialization led to the launch in 2005 of a separate website called CharlestonBridgePhotos.com.

When he’s not shooting, he enjoys spending time with his Golden Retriever, Breck, seeing live music and playing percussion in the King George VII, a local Charleston band.
