EVLT.com is a unique website where both patients and physicians can find information on the EVLT technique for the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins. EVLT stands for Endovenous Laser Treatment, and is a registered trademark of Diomed and AngioDynamics. The EVLT procedure was pioneered in 1999 by Dr. Robert Min and Dr. Luis Navarro with AngioDynamics.

The EVLT Technique

The EVLT technique is an outpatient procedure, which can be done at any one of the thousands of clinics around the world that have been trained and certified in the EVLT method. The treatment is designed to eliminate unsightly varicose veins in a fast and almost completely painless manner. In most cases, EVLT can be done with no long-term scarring, no lengthy recovery time and no side effects.

This treatment can be performed in a doctor’s office in less than an hour. Unlike other treatment options for varicose veins, EVLT requires no general anesthesia or hospitalization. Most patients that undergo EVLT have immediate relief of the symptoms associated with varicose veins, and can return to normal activity right away with little or no pain.

EVLT works by using laser energy to damage the walls of the spider or varicose vein, causing them to shrink and seal closed. This prevents the blood from being able to flow through the painful vein. Because there are many other veins in the leg, the body naturally redirects the blood that used to flow through the damaged vein to other healthy, normally functioning veins. This increases the circulation of blood in the leg, and in turn significantly relieves symptoms and improves overall appearance.

The EVLT procedure is very fast and simple. The doctor performing the procedure uses ultrasound to map out the varicose vein. A local anesthetic is applied to the leg, and a thin laser fiber is inserted through a small incision, usually near the knee. Laser energy is then delivered to the faulty varicose vein until it is sealed shut. Walking and other normal daily activity is encouraged immediately after the EVLT procedure.
The EVLT Advantage

The traditional treatment for the relief varicose and spider veins is a surgery called Ligation and Stripping. This procedure can be quite painful, requires a hospital stay, has a possible long recovery time, and has an average of 10 to 25% recurrence rate.

Clinical data with up to 5 years of follow-up research has shown the EVLT option to have a long-term success rate of 93 to 98%. Based on its higher efficacy and lower morbidity rate, market researchers predict that EVLT will become the new “gold standard” for the treatment of varicose veins.

Some patients experience minor soreness and bruising, but this discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter, non-aspirin pain relievers.

Patient Testimonials

Ultrasound concluded what I had already suspected because of the alleviation of my symptoms. Where radio frequency had failed, the laser procedure had been successful in the closure of the vein in my right leg. I am extremely grateful to the clinic, doctors and staff for helping me. I can't believe how simple the procedure was and how much better I feel.

Doctors Testimonials

Clinical literature clearly shows EVLT to be more effective and less traumatic than ligation & stripping. I expect this procedure to replace the vast majority of L&S procedures for varicose vein treatment over the next few years. It’s simple, easy to learn, and patients love the results. You owe it to your patients to offer this option.

We have performed hundreds of endovenous ablative procedures in our vein practice using both radiofrequency (RF) and laser (EVLT). Our experience has shown EVLT to be a significantly more effective method for vein ablation compared to RF… we have seen an approximate ten-fold greater recanalization rate with RF as opposed to EVLT. Simply put, EVLT is more effective, faster and less expensive to perform. Any patient who would have to undergo a repeat procedure will wholeheartedly agree.
