- It happened in winter when I was reading The Artist's Way, trying to move through my own grief and burnout that came after my husband's successful battle with a malignant brain tumor and our resulting life changes. As suggested in The Artist's Way (see our book recommendations for this and other motivating works), I took myself on an "artist's date" and decided to buy myself an art manikin, after decades of wanting one but telling myself I wasn't an artist and didn't need one. I brought Bella Luna home (and named her for the concept of beautiful moon, or more aptly, beloved lunatic), started posing her and thought "Wow, she'd look great with an organdy skirt and blue ribbon sash. I made her a ballerina for the day, posed her leaping with joy, and dreamed about her that night.
