Drumchapel - Community Information

Description

Drumchapel grew in the '50s and '60s as one of Glasgow's peripheral estates to house those moving as a result of inner city slum clearance. Locally, employment was high with 5,000 employed at Goodyear, 50,000 employed at Singer's in Clydebank and tens of thousands employed in the shipyards.

The population peaked at around 35,000 but had declined to around half that by the early 1990s. People left the area due to the collapse of traditional industries in the '70s and the deterioration of housing in the '80s.

Drumchapel people experience many barriers to employment. A large percentage of the population is dependent on benefits and second or third generation unemployment is not uncommon. There is a high proportion of severe health problems, a high level of single parent households and a low level of car ownership. The business base is relatively small with around 100 private sector employers, half of these in the retail sector.
