Title

Dr. Vino -- wine picks and politics

Description

In my recently finished Ph.D. dissertation I compared the political economy of the wine industry in France and the United States. So yes, I am a real doctor—I don't just play one on the web. Over the course of my research I interviewed dozens of wine producers, growers, CEOs, civil servants, and association leaders in France and the US (and Spain and Brussels for good measure). My wife suggested that instead of letting my research languish unread in a library basement somewhere that I should take out some of the fun parts—like some good wine recommendations! There are plenty of good, inexpensive wines available and I hope to help consumers discover some diamonds in the rough (well, maybe more like rubies) and recognize producers and importers who bring good wine values to the market. I recommend wines simply because I like them: I don't have a commercial interest in the wine industry and I purchase almost all of the wines I review (I occasionally receive unsolicited samples from producers or importers). Because wine quality and consumer access are politically constructed, I also have a section on how politics and economics affect the wines that we drink. Cheers!
