- University of Texas, where he graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors).
- Attended medical school at the University of Texas School of Medicine at the Texas Medical Center.
- During his final elective year of medical school, he studied at Guy's Hospital, London, England.
- He completed his residency in ophthalmology in New Orleans followed by a fellowship in corneal surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston.
- He also studied and completed fellowship training on the airborne eye hospital, Project Orbis, which travels to Third World countries offering surgical eye care.
