Once part of the Gila (HEE-la) Apache Indian Reservation which was established in 1853, more than 100 years ago the US Government opened New Mexico Territory up for homesteading. Horace Hooker migrated from the east coast with the dream of building his own ranch. The Hooker Family did indeed find their dream in southwestern New Mexico, in the peaceful Gila Valley and Bear Creek Basin of Grant County, New Mexico.
