In 1993 the United States Green Building Council developed a system designed to define and measure the sustainability of a building. This system is LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED established a rating system under which a building could measure its sustainability through the following five categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design Process.
