- On April 29, 1949, Doc McKenzie was born in Olanta, South Carolina to Mr. and Mrs. Leroy and Cora McKenzie. Doc, as he is so well known by many, parents were farmers. They taught their son to farm and to know the values of life according to the Word of God. The family was members of Saint Mark’s Holiness Church in Lake City, SC. The Church’s Bishop, R. C. Eaddy, who knew Milbert since he was three years old, nicknamed him “Doc” because of his ability to “doctor” just about anything. It was relevant to many that at the young age of six God’s hands were upon Doc and he became President & Music Director of the choir at his Church. By age eleven, God continued to bless Doc and his talents flourished musically and spiritually. He became the guitarist and musician for the choir and Sunday School Teacher for the Junior Sunday School Class at the church. Doc attended elementary school in Olanta, South Carolina, and when the family moved to Lake City, SC, he completed his education and graduated from Carver High School in 1967. With the love of Jesus and Music in his heart and the heart of his family, in 1965 the Gospel Hi-Lites were organized. The group began with Doc, his sister Beronzy McKenzie and his cousin Handy McFadden (who also named the group) then a few years later, Doc joined his older brothers in Paterson, New Jersey and they became known as Doc McKenzie & The Gospel Hi-Lites.
