Diebold is a company that many have heard of in recent news. They manufacture a large range of products, mostly related to security systems. The majority of their production effort goes towards making ATM systems like the ones you see in day to day life. They have a number of other products though, ranging from safes and vaults to digital systems for keeping track of currency. They have a large line of software products made for financial and commercial systems. And of course, they have the infamous Diebold Election Systems subsidiary of the company, which has come into recent controversy because of purported flaws in the systems. However, it is a stable company with a great product lineup, and they have suffered only a minor setback by having their brand tarnished.

Diebold’s main business comes from the industry of transaction systems such as ATMs. They do pretty much everything related to ATMs, starting with the manufacturing and ending with installation of the machine. In between, there are many other factors that contribute towards the overall security of the machine. Diebold develops the security measures of the machines, and the surveillance system. Frequently, lots of research goes into the exact placement of the machines, to give them a location where they are theoretically safer from robbery – IE, an open location with lots of nearby activity.
Controversy
Diebold experienced some controversy in a story that unfolded between 2004 and 2007. The story had to do with their voting machines that were being used all across the country. Diebold Election Systems made claims that the machines were completely secure. However, the code was analyzed by several experts who deemed that it was not a secure system, and that knowledgeable hackers could affect the outcome. This was just the beginning of trouble for the company. The CEO was at one point said to have his own political interests in high priority. This lead to his resignation, and caused many states to reject the Diebold machines for something more secure. At one point, the company posted a picture of a key on their web site – the key that unlocks a part of the machine that allows access to important components. Any hacker or locksmith with a mind to do it could easily replicate the key. This lead to further security problems and mistrust.
