Description
Heterotrimeric G proteins are well known as signaling mediators downstream of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Now, Shan et al. have identified an unexpected role for the heterotrimeric G protein subunit Gα13 in cell migration. They show that Gα13 is required for receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK)-induced cell migration in mouse cells. This activity is still present when residues in Gα13 that are required for interaction with GPCRs are mutated, suggesting that Gα13 functions downstream of RTKs independently of GPCR signaling and that, surprisingly, it is therefore an important transducer for two different types of receptor.
