DCm-STUDIO, architectural design

DC work.gif
DCm-STUDIO, LLC is an architectural design practice, which deals with both real and speculative projects, exploring spatial organizations derived through the systematic subversion of normative architectural models and their adaptation to local ecologies. DCm-STUDIO was founded in 2001 by Dana Cupkova in New York City and is currently located in Ithaca, New York. Dana is a Director and a Design Principal of DCm-STUDIO. DCm-STUDIO is a client oriented practice, which approaches architecture as a field of cultural ecology that explores local material and tectonic systems, and creates responsive spatial solutions enabled by computational design techniques and form finding. Designs are derived from specific topological and social conditions to create architecture that is applicable to unique human condition, accommodates the speed of changing life styles and the need for new more adaptable models for living in diverse environments.

Dana Cupkova

Dana Cupkova is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Cornell Department of Architecture, a principal of DCm-STUDIO, architectural design and co-principal of EPIPHYTE Lab, a research and design collaborative with Kevin Pratt. Dana's design for the Sandra Gering Gallery in Chelsea was recognized in a "New York Designs 2005: So what’s the big idea?" lecture series competition sponsored by the Architectural League, and her work has been published and exhibited internationally. Her current academic research is focused on ecologically adaptive component construction systems and their cultural and socio-political effects. This work has been awarded an Architectural Foundation's Arnold W. Brunner Grant and in part funded by Cornell University Faculty Innovation in Teaching Award, which will further support embedding the methods of contemporary fabrication technology and discreet energy harvesting systems into architectural design through a better understanding of computationally generated geometry and its responsiveness to particular climactic conditions. Dana's practices deal with sustainable strategies in architectural design and construction.
