David Howarth, MP for Cambridge

Description

David first came to Cambridge in 1977 and was a city councillor for 17 years. Before becoming Cambridge's MP this year, he taught law and economics at Cambridge University and is a Fellow of Clare College. He is married with two children.

David grew up in Walsall, near Wolverhampton. He went to a local state school, Queen Mary's, before moving to Cambridge from where he graduated with a first class honours degree in law. He then took up postgraduate studies, gaining masters degrees in Law and Sociology from Yale University.

As well as leading the city's Lib Dem group throughout the nineties, David was a member of the party's Federal Policy Committee from 1989 to 2000. He is a respected expert on economics and law, and has played a leading role in formulating Lib Dem economic policy. He is also a member of the European Liberal Democrat Council, and stood as the parliamentary candidate for Cambridge in 2001.
