damaka™, which loosely means “The Joy of Communication” in Hindi, is a SIP-based, peer-to-peer software that offers voice, video, IM, file transfer, desktop sharing, voice commands, Internet radio, RSS reader, & other features in an encrypted, real-time environment. Because of its standards-based platform, damaka can connect to and integrate with other SIP-based platforms out there, which means a simple voice conversation can morph into IP radio-listening, desktop collaboration, and multi-party video conferencing – without intermediary servers or supernodes.

Based in Richardson, TX, the multi-media communication and collaboration company plans to offer tools which enable individuals in different locations to work and interact via web conferencing, real-time music jamming, video game playing, and others. As companies move toward globalization, the need for a low-cost and high-quality collaboration solution will increase. damaka is positioned to fill this gap.

Technology

damaka’s patent pending technology collapses the Softswitch and Media Gateway to the user’s PC, resulting in the ultimate distributed switching. This switching technology of the future is a logical extension of the current VoIP architecture. In a traditional VoIP network, the Softswitch is located on the carrier’s premises. All VoIP calls are controlled by the carrier. In a P2P network all sessions take place between the participating computers; there is no intermediate server. damaka’s Personal Softswitch™ system provides advanced features, performance and secure collaborative multimedia communication.

Key Differentiators

Many free IM and voice services are based on the client-server model which means communication goes through servers owned by a third-party. For example, when sending an IM through one of the popular client/server search engine IM tools, a message flows through third party servers which can be monitored by other companies. Thus, the end-user has the client, but someone else controls the server. Other peer-to-peer applications that offer cheap Internet phone calls use relay techniques in which computer resources are utilized to maintain their network. This is called peer-to-peer using the supernode. (This is why performing a simple task on a computer sometimes takes a long time… In a supernode, other members of the supernode can use the user’s system’s resources to make calls.)

Damaka is also peer-to-peer, but direct peering, which means a peer connects directly to another peer, resulting in increased security, privacy, and quality.
