Philip Cassidy and Brian Connaughton set up Cycleways in 1984. Their aim was to have quality bicycles, components and accessories readily available for Irish cyclists. With a city centre location, the shop was easily accessible and gradually built up a loyal customer base consisting of both competitive and non-competitive cyclists alike. The business operated for 8 years from a small shop unit in Parnell Street.
In 1992 a unique business opportunity arose that was too good to pass up. The council was selling a derelict corner site just a couple of doors down from Cycleways. They acquired the property and developed the building that now contains the business. The success of the project helped to change public perception of bicycle shops as dingy greasy unprofessional environments and bring Cycleways into a more dynamic existence. Cycleways now had the resources necessary to expand their range and target market. Spurred by a dynamic economy the business grew from strength to strength and now employs 12 full time members of staff.
Brian and Philip now run Base Active Distribution (enquiries: 
) from Dunshaughlin, Co.Meath. From there they supply bicycle shops nationwide and co-ordinate the design and manufacturing of team clothing.
