REVIEW OF Curves

Since this is not a capsule-based weight loss method, we will instead discuss the concept of this program and determine how it compares with daily dietary supplementation of herbal extracts. The concept behind Curves is that all it takes is 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week for improving “quality of life.” It is marketed for women who feel intimidated by going to the gym either because they are embarrassed by their weight, uncertain about how to use the weight machines, or self-conscious about working out in the presence of men. Curves members are only women, therefore suggesting a more supportive atmosphere. Upon joining, you are provided with a specific routine that you go in and do without having to think about it. Curves also has a “6 Week Solution” for weight management which involves attending “intimate” nutrition classes. The Curves 6 Week Solution is a nutrition program that members can sign up for and attend classes where they will learn how to lose weight and keep it off. The program was developed by scientists at Baylor University under the direction of Dr. Richard B. Kreider, PhD, FACSM. According to the Web site, this program is intended to boost the metabolism and provides a variety of meals that are acceptable. It recommends eating five small meals a day as opposed to three big ones, and says that “no foods are off limits.” Under this program you apparently have a choice of a diet that is either higher in protein or higher in carbohydrates, and suggests limited intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars.
