Colleges That Change Lives

Description

Soon after the publication of the first edition of Colleges That Change Lives in 1996, many of the colleges featured in the book noted an increased number of campus visitors and applicants for admission who indicated they learned about the CTCL schools while reading Loren Pope's guidebooks. College counselors confirmed that Mr. Pope's CTCL message resonated with families: the dependence on college rankings took a backseat to a determination to find the best “fit” for each student, believing such a choice would offer not only the best education for individual learning styles and interests, but also offer students the chance to achieve their greatest personal, intellectual, and professional potential.

Because of some similarities, many CTCL schools already enjoyed a healthy number of cross-applicants, or students who applied to more than one of the schools featured in Colleges That Change Lives. So, in 1998, the CTCL schools began collaborating together in an effort to promote Mr. Pope’s philosophy of finding the best match for each and every student with a college environment rich with opportunity and where faculty were focused solely on undergraduate teaching and advising. Together they traveled nationwide to offer information sessions, which focused on the characteristics and opportunities shared by CTCL colleges, and a college fair, where families could meet individually with CTCL college admission representatives. From their debut, the CTCL events were extremely well-attended, and in 2004 there are 20 CTCL programs scheduled in the U.S., and a small number of international venues are planned. Naturally, a Web site soon developed thereafter and today CTCL.com serves as a clearinghouse for information about the CTCL group as well as a gateway to the individual campus sites.

Loren Pope selected the 40 Colleges That Change Lives schools long before the CTCL schools began working together. Mr. Pope, a noted education writer and journalist, developed his list of distinctive colleges completely independent of any financial relationship with any commercial organization. CTCL member schools do not pay Mr. Pope or his publisher to be listed. Listings are solely based on the independent judgement and recognized expertise of Mr. Pope. The CTCL.com site is enthusiastically supported by Mr. Pope and is simply an opportunity for students, parents, and counselors to learn more about 40 of the most distinctive colleges in the United States.
