Community Service Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing

Description

A Quarter Century!

The Community Service Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CSCDHH) enjoys a quarter of a century history of providing important services in the Greater Seattle area and seven counties. CSCDHH receives funding and support from its community, the State Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, United Way, the City of Seattle; as well as other funding sources. In addition to offering a variety of services, CSCDHH has a library, a computer access room and a multi-purpose facility available for use by the community. CSCDHH continues to enhance services on an ongoing basis.

CSCDHH began at a workshop sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of the Washington State Association of the Deaf in March 1975. Ninety-six deaf and hearing people agreed that there was a need for a Community Service Center in Seattle. A task force resulted from that workshop, known as DAC - Deaf Action Council. This council worked through the year, and in February 1976, they formed the first Board of Trustees, and they elected thirteen members. The Action Committee was in charge of fund raising events, which they conducted throughout the next year and a half, to raise funds to open an office. The Board also sought support through small grants.

On October 15, 1977, an open house was held to celebrate the opening of a 2 room office in Campion Tower at Seattle University. The Board of Trustees was increased to 15 at that time. In March, 1979 the Board increased to 22 members. During the first year, CSCDHH was staffed by a Coordinator on a half-time basis, due to limited funds. An Assistant worked on a full-time basis, supported by a CETA grant. During the second year, CSCDHH picked up the Assistant's salary and the CETA grant was used to fund a new position, TTY Answering Service Operator.
