Geographically NEPAL can be divided in three main regions i.e. mountain, hills and plain, Himalayan ranges from East to West stand like walls between China and Nepal and make the excess towards north very difficult. The mountain ranges are long stretches of land and occupy a handsome chunk of area but it is very sparsely populated occupying less than 5% . There are numerous high mountain peaks and 8 out of 10 highest peaks of world fall in Nepal.
People living from 5000m to 3000m are of Tibetan origin and they have relations - social, religious and financial- towards the north. Bhutias, Sherpas, Lepchas and other related ethnic groups live in these areas. Both the terrain climate of these areas extreme and harsh. Mountain people are mostly occupied in animal husbandry - sheep, goats, yaks and other cattle farming.
Most of the country is hills ranging up to 3000 m and most of the population lives here. Though in early period of unification this country was divided very much ethnically, massive migration of non-ethnics has changed that and after 25 decades there are very few pockets of ethnic majority. So the hills have been multi-racial and multi-lingual society and backbone of Nepalese politics.
