Crown Holdings, Inc., operates in more than 40 countries with 185 plants, leading the industry with its metal packaging products and services. The company has a history of packaging innovation, producing many of the latest and most popular metal packaging products for food and beverages around the world for more than 100 years.

History

William Painter founded crown Holdings in 1892 in Baltimore. The original products were new ways to package beer and sodas. In 1898, the company then known as Crown Cork and Seal Company introduced a machine that could fill and seal bottles at a rapid pace, allowing a rapid rise in production and making the industry more profitable. By 1906, Crown had used its new packaging and bottling technologies to expand across the globe. Plants were opened across Europe and in Brazil and Japan. After a disruption in business during World War I, Prohibition seriously impacted the company, which had been focusing largely on beer bottling. Crown began to focus its manufacturing on soft drinks instead of beer, and the shift kept the company in business. In 1927, an artificial cork boosted company profits and increased expansion. During the Depression, half of all bottle caps in the world were sold by Crown. In 1936 the company expanded into the tin can industry with the acquisition of the Acme Tin Can Company. During World War II, Crown developed a canister for gas masks and other products related to the war. It also began producing beer cans. More can types followed, with aerosol cans for commercial and industrial uses. In the 1960’s, Crown shifted some focus again to the soft drink packaging market and created new products to produce soft drink cans. In the 2000’s, Crown sold off its cosmetic packaging and plastic closures businesses and continues to focus in its metal packaging.

Environmental Commitment

Crown Holdings is committed to environmental assessment to prevent negative environmental impact caused by its manufacturing. The company prides itself on exceeding the existing environmental regulations. It implements its own policies that govern the company’s protection of natural resources around the world. Though manufacturing will have an impact on the environment around it, Crown takes steps to keep that impact to a minimum.

Current Products

Crown manufactures food containers of many types, including food tins, many types of cans, aerosol cans, and shaped containers for products used in the home and in industry. Specialty cans are a specialty of Crown, and cans with highly stylized shapes are manufactured along with straight soda and beer cans. Crown’s metal packaging comes in many different colors and finishes, allowing companies using Crown cans to build their own brand image through packaging. Along with the typical metal food packaging, Crown produces packaging with a high-impact finish using its own proprietary varnish for staying power. Crown also produces packaging for personal and health products. The company prides itself on manufacturing durable metal products with a creative flair that retain the product’s image and entice customers to purchase those products.
