New 2009 research reveals that burning petroleum-based paraffin candles does, in fact, release toxic chemicals. Scientists from the South Carolina State University found that smoke from paraffin candles emitted doses of pollutants, including benzene, toluene and ketones, which have been linked to cancer, asthma and birth defects.
