Cosmopolitan Church

Description

Excerpted from the website:

Cosmopolitan Church, established in 1933, traces her roots from the indigenous Philippine (Episcopal) Methodist Church. Formerly called, Cosmopolitan Student Church, her founding, coincided with the rise of a breakaway group from the Methodist Mission Board in 1933 due to a moral issue that arose in the church and which was resolved arbitrarily by the American-dominated Board to the dissatisfaction of their Filipino counterparts. The incident, which happened in the context of the American Commonwealth period, highlighted our founders’ commitment to Christian morals and nationalist ideals. Secretary Narciso Ramos, one of our founders and father of former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos, in his closing remarks at the Golden Jubilee dinner of Cosmopolitan Church in 1983, encapsulated the historical and nationalistic implication of the walkout: "Those who walked out … not only staged a protest against immorality and injustice but made history in the religious evolution of the Filipino people. It marked the beginning of an indigenous Protestant movement in the Philippines, which has added meaning to the political emancipation of our country."
