This site started as a one man operation, run by Joe Lyles, a one time courtroom lawyer, who now works as a litigation strategy consultant. The site was basically an outlet for numerous essays and articles on progressive political strategy. Joe's key strategic insight was the value of what George Lackoff calls "framing," and the general importance of engaging conservatives at a level beneath the surface of Republican slogan, buzzwords and talking points. He figured out that the key to understanding understanding conservative "worldview" was the assumptions that underlie conservative rhetoric. Once you understand the underlying "frame of reference," it is a simple matter deconstruct that worldview and expose it's errors. The best example of this kind of approach is contained in the seminal essay "Defeat The Right In Three Minutes," which derived the central underlying premise of the conservative agenda, namely cheap labor.
But there is much more to Joe's approach to progressive strategy and tactics. Thirty years ago he got his first lesson in the "truth force" also known as "satyagraha." Beginning with his undergraduate degree in philosophy and continuing through law school, and into the world of criminal defense, he has applied those lessons, and refined his understanding of the art of telling the truth. Many of those insights have found their way into the essays posted right here.
Joe hasn't been alone in his unique perception. Over the two and half years since the site was first launched, an online community of extraordinarily talented "framers" has coalesced around the site's old forum. These include a number of academic "heavyweights" with activist credentials going back to the late sixties. Greenrage was a principle organizer with EarthFirst! in the 1980's and authored a book by that same name. His "framing" credits include introducing the phrase "biodiversity" into general usage among environmentalists. "Uncle John" has a pedigree in progressive activism going back to the Vietnam era. The Bionic Cowlick -- is a Ph.D. candidate in Middle Eastern Studies -- has become an expert in cross cultural framing. We also welcome some bright young voices to our community bloggers, such as Sotek. In addition to his programming talents, the results of which you are looking at, he will specialize in issues regarding the intersection between science and ! religion.
