Description
Composite art is a tool used by law enforcement to assist in the investigation of an unidentified person. A sketch is created by combining various facial features into a single drawing, creating what is known as a composite sketch. The composite sketch is based on a victim or witness' memory. The cognitive interview of the victim or witness is an extremely important part of the process. Composite sketches are used to identify a suspect, a witness, or even a victim of a crime. At times, a composite sketch may help investigators eliminate potential suspects, or identify something very specific, such as a tattoo, scar, or birthmark. Some composite sketches may have lots of detail, while others are more basic. A good composite sketch is accomplished through a combination of cooperation with an investigating agency, the victim or witness' memory and the artist ability to not only capture the witness' memory on paper, but their ability to conduct a good interview. Composite art is an important investigative tool. I encourage law enforcement agencies to utilize composite artists in criminal investigations whenever possible.
