Compass Canoe Company
Description
Compass Cayak™ was conceived one evening in September, 1997 just after I (Joel Flather) had pulled a back muscle offloading a 16' kayak (weighing all of 65lbs.) from the roof of an SUV. At that moment all the memories of the great day of fishing on the river vanished in a lightning bolt of pain and I realized I would never horse around another heavy kayak again…EVER!
I had recently visited the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake (NY) and recalled a beautiful cedar solo canoe that J. H. Rushton (Canton, NY canoe builder from 1873 to 1906) had built for one of his clients who demanded a lightweight canoe. This canoe in question measured 10' 6" long and weighed just under 18 lbs.
Compass Cayak™ was born and one year later we were testing our prototype cayaks™ which led to our first commercial offering the 18 lb. solo cayak™ - the Compass Streamer.
