Title

The Commie Sutra Collective

Description

The Commie Sutra was founded by three Canadian socialists in 2004. It expanded to five members, but today is composed of four, together known as the Commie Sutra Collective. Each member maintains their own unique perspective on socialism. Each member also publishes under pseudonyms, and there is evidence to suggest each is university educated in various disciplines, and range from 20 to 30 years of age. It is not known how a person can become a member. The site is in blog format, but the content varies, although it is generally geared towards informing people about socialism and discrediting conservatism. There are personal stories, research essays, and interpretations of news. Some women's shelter and rape crisis centres have re-published Mercuda's essay, "Rejecting the Decriminalization of Prostitution in Canada". However, the group is mostly known for its satire, nonsensical articles that only vaguely relate to socialism, and guerilla tactics on other sites. In 2005 the group found itself in legal trouble with a group of American conservatives, and their activities subsequently became more restrained. Today, however, the Collective continues to raise the ire of Canadian conservative groups, religious groups, and whomever the most recent article has the potential to offend. They update their site approximately once a month. English (Canadian)
