College Standard Magazine | Network of Student Newspapers - Home

Description

The first College Standard Magazine was printed by a group of Resident Assistants in 2000 at Southwest Texas State University (now - Texas State University) in San Marcos, TX.

In 2002 the second College Standard Magazine was established at the State University of New York at Albany.

Known for its conservative content, the SUNYA edition became a lightening rod for liberal abuse. http://www.scj.us/reporter/pdfs/oct_02_rep.pdfLarge numbers of newspapers were confiscated by the SUNYA Student Government, Radical Muslim groups invaded editorial meetings to protest, and swastikas were scrawled on its newspaper stands.

In Spring 2003, College Standard Magazine, to defy University policy forcing student groups to bear the burden of expensive police protection for controversial events sponsored the http://www.abortionno.org/GAP/albany.html Genocide Awareness Project event. Under threat of a lawsuit from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_More_Law_Center Thomas More Law Center, the Friday night before the event was to occur, University administrators agreed to not charge College Standard Magazine for police protection. University administrators subsequently scrapped the policy providing free police protection to student organization events.

The event resulted in the largest counter demonstration held at the University at Albany and resulted in a bonfire of College Standard Magazine newspapers in front of state police, despite the obvious safety danger to nearby buildings.

In the Spring 2003, in reaction to both an investigation into student government corruption and the G.A.P. event, College Standard Magazine was denied student government funding.

http://www.splc.org/report_detail.asp?id=1018&edition=26 A resulting lawsuit judgment in the U.S. Northern District Court of New York decided that the denial of funding was unconstitutional and is now on appeal to the U.S. Second Court of Appeals.

College Standard Magazine editions were also established at Tarrant County College, Texas Woman's University and State University of New York at Oswego.
