The Child Neurology Knowledge Environment (CNKE) is a bold step into 21st century publishing. As the CNKE is launched, there is no example to emulate, because the CNKE will bring together a unique amalgamation of material. It represents a vision of what is possible and a hope that, by collaborative effort, child neurologists can create a dynamic venue that will revolutionize the way we care for children with neurologic disorders. While the concept is revolutionary, its development will be evolutionary — building pieces and adding content and functionality as it is built.
Creation and dissemination of information is undergoing dramatic changes in the internet era. It is now possible for authors to be closer to the publishing process, create or revise content with instant distribution to large audiences. Quality control, a role traditionally managed by editors and publishers, remains a key component and important challenge.
The CNKE is designed to be dynamic. Review editors will accept an assignment over time. Their articles can be updated to reflect the latest developments. They will moderate the dialog which will be attached to their reviews. Others will take this content and translate it into materials for patients and families. Still others will work to create tools for use in the daily practice of caring for patients.
