CMS Energy is formed from two principal subsidiaries:

Consumers Energy - a public utility which provides natural gas and electricity to more than 6 million of Michigan’s 10 million residents and serves customers in all 68 of the state’s Lower Peninsula counties.
CMS Enterprises - whose primary businesses are independent power production, and also natural gas transmission.

Operations

Electric Utility - Supplied through Consumers Energy, which is the 13th-largest investor-owned electric company in the United States. They deliver 40 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to 1.7 million customers in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

Gas Utility - Supplied through Consumers Energy, which is the 5th-largest investor-owned natural gas utility in the United States. They deliver more than 360 billion cubic feet of gas through a system of 26,400 miles of pipelines, serving 1.6 million customers in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

Independent Power production - Run through CMS Generation. This subsidiary was formed in 1986, and it acquires, develops, builds and operates non-utility power generation plants in the United States and abroad. It has ownership interests in operating power plants totaling more than 8,000 gross megawatts.
