Most dog beds are just a pillow in a basket or a hollowed out fleece or sheepskin nest. There is no place to snuggle in these beds. Way back in 1977, Jo thought there must be a better "design" for a dog bed, a bed created for small dogs that like to snuggle in. She spent hours and hours perfecting the ultimate "snuggle bed" for her dog Maggie. Finally Jo designed a bed that Maggie just loved. It is sort of like a sleeping bag with a built-in pillow and a nylon rod at one end to keep the bed open for crawling inside.
It didn't take long before friends and neighbors were asking Jo to make a dog bed for their dogs, cats, etc. Soon she was hearing many stories about how the various dogs and critters were just in love with their new beds and how this dog bed would make a great business, but Jo did not have time to do anything with her dog bed design until 1997 and no one else had come up with her idea.
Jo retired after 33 years of teaching, the last 23 years with what is now Southern Oregon University where she was an associate professor of physical education working with major students, supervising student teachers and teaching various service classes. Jo also coached the women's volleyball team for 18 years and the tennis team for 13 years, both teams gained conference, northwest and national rankings.
