Description

McEldowney was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and grew up in Florida. A dedicated doodler in school, he developed his early artistic technique by obsessively plagiarizing his favorite cartoon art, "Peanuts," in the margins of textbooks and spelling tests - all to the intense annoyance of his teachers. He attended Allegheny College, where he briefly majored in biology, then art, likewise to the intense annoyance of his teachers. He then went to New York City's Juilliard School where he studied the viola, drew in the margins of his orchestral music, and graduated with a bachelor's and a master's degree in music. He also studied and performed at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he again drew in the margins of his orchestral music. Once out in the work force, McEldowney labored concurrently as a professional violist, music critic and cartoonist. His music articles and reviews have appeared in numerous magazines as well as the Neue Zurcher Zeitung in Zurich, Switzerland. He was the assistant editor of Opus, a classical music magazine. His cartoons have been published in magazines including Yankee, Opus, Pulse and Punch. In the summer of 1993, he created 9 Chickweed Lane, which quickly developed a strong and tenacious following. The strip has received two Genesis Award Commendations for animal rights issues. McEldowney lives in Maine with his wife and two daughters, and still occasionally doodles in the margins.
