Welcome to Chicago KTC
Chicago Karma Thegsum Chöling (KTC) is the official home of His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley Dorje in Chicago. We are a center for study and practice in the Karma Kagyu Buddhist tradition of Tibet. We are affiliated with Karma Triyana Dharmacakra in New York and are under the guidance of Ven. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche and Ven. Bardor Tulku Rinpoche.
KTC offers both meditation instruction, for those new to meditation or the Kagyu tradition, and group meditation sessions for anyone who wishes to attend. Meditation and instruction are offered free of charge. Ongoing classes on Tibetan Buddhism are available at KTC. Several times a year we have the good fortune of hosting visits of accomplished Buddhists teachers of the Kagyu lineage. These teachers have included Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, Bardor Tulku Rinpoche and Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche.
The Kagyu tradition dates back to the 10th century in India and has remained a viable lineage up until the present day. The Kagyu tradition was brought to Tibet by Marpa Lotsawa passed on to Milarepa and Milarepa's student Gampopa. Gampopa brought the Kagyu teachings to many Tibetans and many branches of Kagyu formed. One of the most important and stable was the Karma Kamstang which was founded by Gampopa's student the first Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa. The Karmapa was the first great teacher to reincarnate leaving a letter for his students with details of his future rebirth. This rebirth of a great master is known as a tulku. The sixteenth Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, was responsible for much of the transmission of Kagyu Dharma to Europe and America. Today the seventeenth Karmapa Orgyen Trinley Dorje, who resides in India, continues this long tradition of sacred Buddhist instruction.
