History
In 1866, Houston Gas Light Company was started. It was initiated to supply gas made from oyster shells and coal. The gas was meant for the street light in a southern Texas village. The first gas plant was established in 1868 by Houston. In 1882 Houston Electric Light and Power Company conducted first light test. Street lamps in Houston came up within next two years. In 1887 Houston Electric Light and Power was taken over by Houston Gas Light Company.
In 1976 Houston Industries was formed after many turbulent happenings and many different acquisitions and mergers. Houston Industries prepared for acquisition of NorAm Energy Corp. in 1996. In 1997 the deal was completed. The name of Houston Industries was changed to Reliant Energy Inc. in 1999. Its subsidiaries also changed their names. 2001 saw another change of name. This time Reliant Energy’s name was changed to CenterPoint Energy.
The company history saw many acquisition and mergers and demergers in its history. It passed through a tough competition and turbulent time to reach its state today.
