- CSI was founded by Maya Wiley , a civil rights lawyer and advocate, and Jocelyn Sargent, a political scientist. Prior to founding CSI, both worked in various governmental and non-governmental organizations on issues of race and poverty for more than a decade. They met at the Open Society Institute, where they identified work and strategies to dismantle structural and institutional racism . In their examination of a variety of national, regional and local groups, they found that there were too few organizations engaging in specific pieces of work necessary to create structural reforms. They identified the following needs:
