About our Store
Caterwaul Books is a family book business owned and operated by Karen and Jeff Ungar. We have been involved in bookselling and collecting since 1988 and opened up Caterwaul Books in August of 1998. We are currently only providing phone and internet sales at this time--we do not offer an open shop for browsing.
Why Caterwaul Books?
Often we are asked, why is the store named 'Caterwaul Books?' It actually is named after our daughter. Yes, we do own cats (or rather they own us.) But the idea for the store name came about after our daughter was born in 1992. Caitlin had a mighty set of lungs and a will to be spoiled, so when she hollered we started to call it the cater-waul. Upon opening the bookstore, it just seemed to fit with the cats and the fact that often when customers call, there's often a kid somewhere in the background. Caitlin is now 9 and rather proud of her namesake, and puts a few hours a week into helping with the books. Our other bookscout in training is Jon-Christian, who is ten and is our book-shelver extraordinaire.
Are there really cats at Caterwaul?
Yes! The Cats of Caterwaul are fewer than in past years; there are now three. Gus, an orange Maine Coon; Princess, a brown tortoise Maine Coon and Patch, a gray and tan splattered short hair.
