Car Hire Excess Insurance

One aspect often overlooked or misunderstood in relation to renting a car is the "insurance excess". Although prices will generally (but not always) include Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Insurance, rental operators have been steadily increasing the amount of insurance excess that will be passed onto the hirer in the event of a claim on the insurance. A typical excess may be around £800, but much higher figures are not unheard of, perhaps £1500 or more.

One option is to pay for a "Insurance Waiver", this covers the hirer for the excess in the event there is a claim. Such insurance is clearly advisable and recommended. However, when taken out with the rental operator direct, this can be quite an expensive option, amounting to anything from £8 to £20 per day. Some people have reported that the excess insurance cost more than the vehicle rental.

As a consequence of the high charges for waiver insurance, a number of specialist insurers have introduced inexpensive policies on a "Pay and Claim" basis. These policies allow hirers to purchase the insurance excess waiver, independently of the hire, allowing them to make substantial savings. For example, an annual insurance excess waiver will typically cost no more than a rental operator would charge for 5 or 6 days. Therefore it is an excellent option for the informed and cautious traveller.

In additon to the insurance excess, most of these Pay and Claim policies will cover other items not generally covered, which include windows, tyres, undercarriage and roof damage, with a typical ceiling of £2000 per claim.

Car Hire Assistant, in association with specialist insurer Odyssey Group, has an excellent "Car Insurance Excess Waiver" policy, which is independent of the hire. This provides the hirer with a choice, based on their needs and risk profile. Hirers can choose to accept the risk of an excess, opt for paying the rental operator for their own policy or, take out an independent Pay and Claim policy with Car Hire Assistant in association with Odyssey Group. This is inline with our policy of being completely open and allowing our customers to make an informed decision in advance of booking their rental car.
