CALA was originally founded as the City of Aberdeen Land Association in 1875. It was originally a land management company collecting feu duties and ground rents. In 1974 current Chairman, Geoff Ball, acquired a controlling interest in the business. Diversification into housing development in Scotland was quickly followed by a move into commercial property development. CALA Finance was born in 1985 when CALA pioneered the residential development funding market.
CALA's commitment to being a market leader paved the way for further expansion and CALA Homes began establishing subsidiaries across England. The Group enjoyed successive growth throughout the eighties and nineties. In June 1999, ten senior members of CALA's management, with the backing of the Bank of Scotland, bought CALA plc. The new holding company became CALA Group Ltd.
