Butte Creek became a reality in 1995, and began production almost a year later in the Spring of 1996. The 8,500-square-foot building was at one time a beer distribution warehouse, and after a major remodel, now houses Chico's only microbrewery.

The story begins with two beers that we still make today, Roland's Red and Creekside Wheat. At the time master brewer Roland Allen had 13 years homebrewing experience and nine years as a brewer across town at Chico's "other" brewery. There were only four 40-barrel fermentors in the cellar, so they inherited names: Chico (an obvious choice), Groucho, Harpo and Zeppo. The beer was unfiltered at first, and only available on tap.
