Burdick Gallery of Inuit Art

Description

Inuit Art is created by men and women who live in small and remote Eskimo communities mostly lying on the coastal areas of Hudson Bay, Baffin Island, and the high central Canadian Arctic. Resettlement into these villages by the traditionally nomadic Inuit some 50 years ago ended the frequent scourge of starvation, but challenged the Inuit to develop a new culture and learn to adapt to the pressures of Western society. With strong support from collectors to the south, the Inuit soon discovered among themselves an enormous talent for creation of fine art. They have now passed down this talent through several generations, with the natural evolution over time of style and technique that characterizes vibrant art communities.

Inuit art emerges from and frequently portrays a culture radically different from our own. Yet it also expresses the commonality of many human values - reverence for family bonds, respect for the power, beauty and intelligence of other living creatures, and a sense of fear, awe, and mystery about the forces that shape our lives. Although its creators live in one of the world's harshest environments, it is often informed by a lively sense of humor. With these qualities, the best Inuit art establishes a strong and enduring emotional bond with its collectors.

Inuit artists have strong and distinctive personal styles, from highly refined to primitive, from small to large, and with diverse individual approaches to the same subject matter. Some have a quite representational approach, while others treat their subjects with a high degree of abstraction and stylization.
