There are 24 bones in the rib cage responsible for protecting your lungs and heart. The top seven ribs are the ribs known as the true ribs. They are connected in the back to the spinal cord while the front of the ribs is connected to the breastbone. The other ribs below these are known as false ribs and are only connected to the spine and to the true ribs in the front, with the last two ribs known as floating ribs only connected to the spine and not connected at all in front to anything.
