Wiki

Broad Street School in the 1920's was a great school to be attending if you wanted to play rugby union. Harold Suddens (Pop) was the sports master who coached the boys rugby team. Pop Suddens formed a formidable team with seven former schoolboy internationals. The side went on to win one of the oldest schoolboy cups the Coventry F.C. Shield and in 1929 Pop Suddens was instrumental in setting up a new rugby club 'Broad Street Old Boys'.

The new club needed a pitch to be able to play rugby on and a local farmers field was located. The land was at Bedlam Lane, in Exhall Coventry. This proved to be a good location for the club as it became their home up until after the second world war.

Following the end of the war the club suffered a nomadic existence moving grounds until they finally settled on Coventry's War Memorial Park. The 'Street stayed at the War Memorial park until the end of the 1950's where the club sought to purchase their own facilities. This was ground breaking at the time as most clubs used municipal facilities not having the cash to invest. The modern day rugby club have reaped the benefits of this decision time and time again.

The 'Old Club' as it is still affectionally called was build on Henley Road in Coventry with cash fund raised by many different ways and means. As the club gained a greater following of players as the game gained additional followers and players it outgrew its Henley Road ground and a new location was located. The club sold the land to a local builder, maintaining the clubhouse to use as a social club which still exists and has over 300 social members. Many of these members living in houses that were built on the former pitches.

The move in 1973 saw the club locate to the city boundary at Binley Woods creating facilities that were the envy of many visiting teams with 4 pitches, the first XV pitch larger than Twickenham, the home of English rugby and a two story clubhouse. Again the club outgrew their home and another location investigated.

The last move saw the club 'cross the road' relocating from one side of Coventry's Eastern Bypass to the other side, creating additional pitches and better facilities, once again setting the standard to follow.

The new Ivor Preece Field was opened by current England Manager and World cup winning captain Martin Johnson. The official opening day fixture saw the first XV at the time lock horns with A presidents select team. The club are very ambitious and the facilities matched that ambition. A 250 all seater stand, 6 senior rugby pitched with flood lighting available for 2 of them.

On the playing side the club regularly put of 6 senior sides with mini rugby sides playing on a Sunday with age groups from under 7's to under 16's. The mini rugby is one of the longest established setups with over two hundred children both boys and girls regularly training and playing, learning the game of rugby union.
