Brendan O'Neill: A pain in the ear

Description

About me

I am the deputy editor of spiked, the online magazine with the modest ambition of making history as well as reporting it. I started my career in journalism at spiked's predecessor, LM magazine, until that was forced to close following a libel action brought by ITN. My writing has been published widely on both sides of the Atlantic, including in the Spectator, the New Statesman, the Guardian, BBC News, the Christian Science Monitor, Salon and other publications. I also write a blog for the Guardian. I am a co-founder of the Manifesto Club, which aims to reclaim the creative spirit of the Enlightenment for the twenty-first century. I was a consultant for the book Human, published by Dorling Kindersley and winner of the BMA Medical Book Award 2005, and I am currently writing a book about terrorism titled From Bosnia to Beslan: How the West Spread al-Qaeda. See below for forthcoming talks, and radio or TV appearances.

7 July 2006: I will be interviewed on the hour-long show Little Atoms, on Resonance FM, at 4.30pm on Friday 7 July. Click here for more information, or tune in here. READ A TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW HERE.

22 June 2006: Sir Christopher Meyer, the head of the Press Complaints Commission, has quoted me in his ongoing spat with the BBC's chief foreign correspondent John Simpson. Meyer is upset that Simpson, in a recent speech to the Churches' Media Conference, attacked the PCC. He has now written to Simpson, to chastise him for his 'plumb ignorance' about the PCC's work; he also took Simpson to task for repeating claims that a paediatrician had been 'beaten up' by a mob who mistook her for a paedophile after apparently being whipped into hysteria by certain newspapers. According to a Guardian report, Meyer said: 'It is not my job to defend newspapers. But you would do well to look at your own organisation's website for February 16 of this year, where Brendan O'Neill's piece, "Whispering Game", gives the background to the story of the paediatrician, mistaken for a paedophile, whose place was "smashed up". Contrary to what you said to the Churches' Media Conference, there appears to be little evidence that this six-year-old incident ever happened.' You can read that BBC piece of mine here. I wonder, however, if Meyer has read my review of his book about his work as ambassador in Washington, published on spiked under the headline 'Sir Christopher Meyer: what a creep' - in which I described him as 'the political equivalent of those blonde girls who fuck footballers and then tell all to the tabloids....'
