It was in 1994 that Lisa Dawdy-Kennette and Doreen Janzen realized their common interest in establishing a choir for the youth in the City of Brantford and Brant County. Both being music teachers, they were eager to encourage a love of fine choral music in children within the community. Under the guidance of Alvin Spaxman, former Coordinator of the Arts for the Brant County Board of Education, the idea of the Brant County Youth Singers was born. Over 100 auditions were held in June of that year and 45 members were selected.
The first public performance was held during Sunday morning worship at Heritage United Church on Nov. 13, 1994. That same year, they were invited to sing with the London Citadel Band of the Salvation Army. News of the choir spread quickly. The following year they performed with Hamilton's Bach-Elgar choir at a performance entitled "A Capella Gold" with special guests, the Nylons, Vox Nouveau and Faith Chorale. Performances over the years have always included local musical groups such as the Brantford Memorial Concert Band, the Little String Orchestra, Zimrah, the Tudor Singers of Brantford, and the Brant Youth Symphony. They have performed with the CBC award winning Amabile Youth Singers of London, and have been fortunate enough to have recorded their first CD with this fine group. Their second CD was released in the Fall of 2002. They have performed with Juno-nominated Paul Tobey at the world premier of his 2003 production.
Brant County showcases its talented youth each February in the "Celebrate Our Youth" concert, held at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts. The Brantford Children's Chorus has performed at this event along-side the Brant Youth Symphony, the Little String Orchestra and Brant Suzuki String School, and other regional musical talents. This annual event has always been a great success.
