People like bears for many different reasons, and people start to make bears for different reasons too. The story that I have to tell will strike a chord with anyone who has loved and lost a favourite bear. This is maybe the most compelling reason why people become obsessed with finding that one elusive teddy. It is, however,an obsession which can lead one into a fulfilling and rewarding hobby that can go some way towards making amends. I would like to tell you why bears play such an important roll in my life. I can't imaging a world with out bears!
In the eighties I made many "rag" bears without joints and they proved very popular with family and friends, but my ambition was to one day make a "real" bear with traditional joints.
It was the Christie Bear stand at a bear fair in the spring of 1994 that totally inspired me. It was while looking for somewhere to go in the local 'What's on' news paper I discovered that specialist bear fairs existed. I was mesmerized-hundreds of bears under one roof! I really didn't know where to start, but after a little guidance I chose my materials and equipment. I wanted to have a go myself because even though there were bears of every design, size and colour, I still could not find one that I had set my mind on. I had visions of long arms, long snout and big feet - a really traditional bear.
