A particular gesture, a glance or a certain posture are crucial to characterizing his models. ) Bo Bakker is a painter from the Netherlands who makes contemporary realistic portraits, in which he tries to confine attractive brush strokes and other artistic effects to the absolute minimum necessary for a lively painting. Also his backgrounds are therefore painted neutral.
On photographs the paintings rather looks like photographs, not in the least because the portraits are generally large sized (sometimes the models are life sized), and painted full body. Because of this, especially on web sized images, the brush stroke can be difficult to discover.
Essential however to the portrait paintings of Bo Bakker is the uninhibited, natural moment. The instant when someone is more or less unaware of being looked at and, in spite of the artificiality of posing, is just being natural. A particular gesture, a glance or a certain posture are crucial to characterizing his models. So do not expect the static poses that are usual in portraiture. Though not especially necessary for the expression, and not less in contrast to traditional or professional portraiture, he does not avoid a smile or other short living (facial) expressions.
