B.O.S. Electric, Servicing the Bay Area, Wine country & Hawaii. Integrated Lighting Controls, Lighting Design, Audio & Video Solutions, Expert Installation

Description

B.O.S. Electric is a growing team of approximately thirty technicians, supervisors, administrators, designers, and electricians. We have a staff licensed electrical engineer and lighting designer. We specialize in high-end lighting and lighting control systems. Design-build projects are our forte. We started in our present form in 1984, with the company incorporating at the start of 1995. We’re currently working in at least seven bay area counties, but are looking outside our present area to franchise additional locations in order to provide service in other communities that would support our type of business.

To the best of his recollection, Julian wired his first group of electrical outlets in the summer of 1962. His stepfather was a Marin County general contractor at the time. Julian worked at almost every construction trade during weekends and summer vacations throughout high school. The fall of 1967 brought enlistment in the U.S. Navy. Julian was sent to the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Millington, Tennessee for aviation electronics training. Along with math and electronics fundamentals, the courses included ground-stabilized navigational computers, airborne search radar systems, TACAN systems, and missile guidance systems. He was one of the top performing students during this stay and was offered an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis during this period. The 70's, for Julian, were a wild ride. He had several jobs with contractors both electrical and general and work for different performing entities doing sound and stage lighting. Julian, these days, is just grateful to have survived the period. 1979 found him in Santa Monica, working as a supervisor for American Eagle, a large electrical contractor. In early 1980 the side jobs offered to him were to lucrative to ignore, so he left the company to work on his own. Among other notable achievements, he designed and built the electrical systems for the Hand Prop Room in Culver City, still, we believe, the largest prop room servicing the motion picture industry. In 1982 Julian came home to Marin County. He went to College of Marin mornings, finishing the lower division works towards a degree in electrical engineering, and worked as a self-employed electrician in the afternoons and weekends. He was awarded a grant to continue that education at U.C. Berkeley. 1984 brought a marriage and a renewed sense of commitment to the small business already started. On June 15, 1984 he was finally licensed and insured. In the following years, he slowly built up the business, always leaning toward higher-end projects, trying to incorporate his design, electronics, and engineering background into the work he sought. Julian designed an estimating system that we still use. The focus of the firm has always been 'Being of Service': Remain focused on the wants and needs of our clients, success will follow. In 1991 Julian found a supervisor with the same philosophy in business, Dan Carlos. B.O.S. Electric had eight employees when Dan came to the firm, the business mushroomed after that. By taking over the day-to-day operation of B.O.S., Dan allowed Julian to concentrate on growing the business, build alliances with contractors, specialty manufacturers, architects, and engineers. B.O.S. began to specialize in 'design-build' projects; getting recognition for design contributions made on notable projects throughout the Bay Area. B.O.S. purchased two small electrical contracting firms in the 90's, Gatter Electric and Lockwood Electric. B.O.S. incorporated in January of 1995; Dan became a limited partner at that time. Julian's latest idea is to expand our company outside of the Bay Area. He feels that our now complete business model may well work in other areas, which could support a business like ours. We are currently in negotiations with a contractor in Palm Desert to start the first B.O.S. Electric franchise. Julian currently lives in Belvedere with his wife of nearly twenty-one years, Susan, and his sixteen-year-old daughter, Beth Anne. Julian is a member of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry), Robt. Gordon Sproul Associates at U.C., and is the current president of the parent's association and member of the board of directors for the San Francisco Girl's Chorus.

A lifetime Marin County resident, Dan came to B.O.S. in May of 1991. His efforts on our behalf may be the single most important reason for the subsequent success of the business. At the time of this writing Dan has been in the electrical construction business for nearly 35 years. Dan attended College of Marin (A.S.) and Sacramento State University. Dan was a self-employed electrical contractor for seven years; had various lengths of employment with CMSH Electric, Gatter Electric, and OFD Electric before taking the number two spot at B.O.S. In 1995 Dan took over the day-today operations of our company in 1994 and became a shareholder, officer in the corporation, and Vice President when Being of Service, Inc. began on Jan. 1st, 1995. Dan currently lives in Novato, CA with wife Laura and two beautiful children, Danielle and Mathew.
