According to the BBC, winter temperatures have risen by over 2°C in the last 30 years in Antarctica. Antarctica holds enough water in its ice to raise sea levels by 60 metres if it all melted. So far, scientists don’t know whether the rise is due to natural variations in Antarctica’s climate system, or due to increases in greenhouse gas emissions.
It isn’t just the ice sheets of Antarctica that are of concern. In fact, Greenland’s glaciers are sinking into the sea and melting and Greenland is being rocked by more and more “glacial earthquakes”.
I get a laugh when I talk to my dad, who’s fairly right wing. He argues that Global Warming is a myth, and that people didn’t cause it, and that any global warming is natural. I respond. So what. Who cares who did what. The evidence is pretty overwhelming that something is happening. People are going to suffer regardless of what the cause is. I think it’s laughable that we’re aruging about why and what, rather then doing something about it. It’s sort of like Nero fiddling while Rome burnt down, isn’t it?
