While safer and more convenient than refill, tank exchange represented a small percentage of the market at the time and was viewed as a commodity service. Blue Rhino has dramatically changed both those industry dynamics.
A national distribution network was constructed, retailer partnerships were established, innovative, value-added features were built into the product, and a new brand was born. It was named Blue Rhino after the strong, tough, interesting and fun-loving animals Billy had admired on a trip to Africa.
